Flixfer Now Supports WebP and AVIF Image Conversion
We're excited to announce that Flixfer's Image Converter now fully supports WebP and AVIF — the two modern image formats that are rapidly becoming the new standard for the web.
What Are WebP and AVIF?
WebP was developed by Google and offers superior compression compared to JPEG and PNG. A WebP image is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPEG at the same visual quality.
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is newer and even more efficient — AVIF images can be 50% smaller than JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP. It's the format Netflix uses for its thumbnails.
Why Does This Matter?
Image format choice has a direct impact on:
- Page load speed — Smaller images mean faster websites and better Core Web Vitals scores.
- Bandwidth costs — Smaller files cost less to serve, especially on mobile networks.
- SEO — Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. Switching to WebP or AVIF can improve your search rankings.
- User experience — Faster-loading images reduce bounce rates and improve engagement.
